Handgun Permits

County residents wanting an Indiana handgun license make application through the Warrick County Sheriff's Office.  Residents in the city limits of Boonville, Chandler or Newburgh make application at their respective city police departments.  The applications are completed at the office, fingerprints taken, authorizing signatures obtained and local fees collected.

There are two types of permits:

1. Personal Protection Permit, also known as the unlimited permit - A Personal Protection Permit provides that the holder may carry the handgun anytime, anywhere in the State of Indiana (unless restricted by proprietary rules) in plain sight or concealed. 

2.  The Hunting and Target Permit covers carrying the handgun to and from hunting/target practice. The gun must be unloaded and in plain sight during transport.

Applicants may apply for either a (4) four year permit or a lifetime permit: 

• Applicant's must list any criminal arrest and never have been convicted of a felony.

• Applicant's must not be considered an alcohol or drug abuser.

• Applicant's cannot have been sentenced on any crime for which he/she has received more than a one (1) year sentence. 

Applications for gun permits, fingerprinting and payment of fees may be made at any time.  The Sheriff, Chief  Deputy or Lieutenants must sign the handgun permit, so you may be required to return later to retrieve the forms.

Applicable Fees:

• State fees can only be paid in the form of a cashier's check or money order and must be sent with the application in the envelope provided. 

• There is a local fee that is due at the time of application and may be in the form of cash, check or money order.

• The applicant is responsible for mailing the paperwork to the State and the permit will be returned by mail directly to the applicant.

*A portion of the local fee is refundable if a license is not issued. The entire state fee is refundable if no license is issued.

Civil Process

One of the main functions of a County Sheriff's Office is to serve the Courts.  This includes service of process for all three (3) county courts, other Indiana counties and out-of-state courts.  Civil process employees serve several types of papers related to small claims actions, misdemeanor, felony and civil proceedings.  This office will serve only those papers issued by the Courts.  Personal service will be attempted but, if unsuccessful, service will be made by leaving a copy at the address listed.  A full street address is required.

Out-of-state agencies should include any affidavit of service required and a self-addressed stamped envelope for return.  There is an out-of-state service fee of $60.oo for each individual to be served.  This fee is to be remitted with the papers to be served.

Report Copies

Copies of completed accident reports, case reports, etc. are available for a fee of $5.oo per report.  Requests may be made by mail or in person, with the fee payable prior to receipt of the copies.  Cash, checks or money orders are accepted.  Only copies of those cases or accidents worked by Warrick County Sheriff's Office are available.  It would be advisable to contact the office by phone to confirm that the report is complete and available.

Title Checks

Vehicle inspections, commonly referred to as title checks, are required for any vehicle purchased out of state, assembled (e.g. homemade trailers) or for vehicles that have a salvage title.  The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles requires a title check of the manufacturer's Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), prior to licensing in Indiana.  The VIN is compared to entries made for stolen vehicles and a law enforcement officer completes the necessary form.  Officers are sent to the owner's home for this service, if the vehicle is not legal to drive on public roadways.  Vehicles that are legally licensed may be driven to the Warrick County Sheriff's Office for this service.  There is a fee of $5 per vehicle for all title checks.  This may be in the form of cash, check or money order.

Criminal Record Checks

Limited criminal history information is available, either by written request or in person.  No request for this information is honored  over the phone or by fax.  This record inspection is limited to the record of incarcerations in the Warrick County Security Center and applies only to the original charge.  No information as to final disposition (resulting in charges, fines, sentencing, etc.) is available.  The full name and at least one identifier, such as date of birth or social security number must be provided.

This service is frequently requested for adoptions, travel visas, pre-employment requirements, etc.  There is a fee of $7 for each record check and may be paid by cash, check or money order.  Criminal history checks are performed Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Indiana State Tax Warrants

Indiana County Sheriffs are required by State Statute to collect delinquent State Tax.  These taxes may be for individual income, sales tax, withholding or corporation liability.  The Indiana Department of Revenue first files a lien at the County Clerk's Office, then forwards a copy to this office.  Taxpayers are provided an opportunity to either establish a payment plan with this office or to pay the debt in full.  Failure to pay this debt may result in a levy being placed on checking/saving accounts and sale of personal property to satisfy this debt.  Tax warrants that remain unsatisfied are returned to the Department of Revenue for further action, resulting in additional costs to the taxpayer.

Payment may be made in person at the Warrick County Sheriff's Office or by mail.  No personal or business checks are accepted.  Please arrange to pay by cashier's check, money order or cash.  Payments are accepted Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
