Warrick County Sheriff's Office

Explorers

The Explorer program is designed to give students between the ages of 14-21 a hands on experience in law enforcement.  The Explorer is introduced to law enforcement through actual law enforcement training, guest speakers, and field trips.

After completing the "Ride-Along Training Program" the Explorer will be able to ride along with Deputies form the Warrick County Sheriff's Office.  This will give the Explorer hands on experience as a police officer.

Explorers are also very active in the community.  Many different organizations within the community call on the explorers to help with fingerprinting, passing out DNA kits and traffic control.  Active participation in community events is an important part of being an explorer.

Membership to Explorer Post 189 is open to any students who meet the following requirements:

Meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month and are generally held at the Warrick County Security Center in Boonville. Meetings last between 1½ to 2 hours.

Some of the upcoming training will include traffic stops, domestic violence, drunk driving, building searches and first aid.  Some guest speakers will include the Indiana State Police, FBI, DEA, Secret Service, Excise Police, Conservation Officers and many other agencies.  Training will also be taught by specialized units within the Warrick County Sheriff's Office.  This includes K-9, SSOT, Dive Team, and Investigations.

The explorer program also includes activities to build leadership skills, brotherhood, and to have fun.  This involves attending the Explorer National Conference, rock climbing, camping, canoeing, snow skiing, and rappelling.  Field trips include the Indiana State Police Crime Lab and the Indiana Law Enforcement Police Academy.

The program is designed to be run by the Explores themselves and to be a minimum cost to the parent or explorer.  Annual dues are $20.  On trips and outings the Post tries to cover some of the cost.  This is done by the Explorers holding fundraiser activities and taking donations.  This can include carwashes, cookouts or any other idea the Explorers can come up with
